Replacing Your Dodge Caravan PCM Can Fix Numerous Problems

By Granderson Elliot

The power train control module that you find on your car is the brain of the engine. This electronic unit controls many functions of the car from the fuel system all the way to the gears in the transmission. Without it, your car would not run as efficiently. Also, Grand Caravan ECM contains software and circuits that can be changed to fit your needs whether it be for towing or just long distance driving on the open highway.

An absence of a car PCM (Powertrain Control Manual), also known as ECU (Engine Control Unit) or simply a car computer, cars do not function. These parts are made to endure a long time but at times, it stops functioning. It does not mean that these devices are needed to be replaced immediately because there are ways to solve these problems. Most often, it's just a case of a busted sensor. These sensors function by transmitting information to the car computer.

When a car computer is not able to get vital information due to broken sensors, it will surely affect its functions. Such effects would most likely result to non-functioning of the car. For example, a computer will not be able to identify how much gas it needs to release to the engine in order for the car to operate on its proper speed when the sensors in the throttle are not functioning.

In addition, a car will not also work properly if its Air flow sensor won't work properly. Air flow sensor and the car's computer work in harmony in the sense that air flow sensor sends vital information to the computer and in return, the computer will send back information that will affect the car's performance. Air flow sensors work by determining the volume of air that goes right into the engine and sends this data to the computer and the computer will now send the right amount of fuel to be mixed with the air that goes into the engine. A discrepancy with the process will affect the car's performance.

Another part of a car that works with the car's computer and will ultimately affect the function and performance of the car is the Air flow sensor. Air flow sensor basically works by measuring the amount of air that goes inside the engine and then sends this information to the car's computer.

If you think your PCM is broken you will want to check all of your fuses on your car. Sometimes these fuses blow and will shut down different electronic components. These fuses are suppose to protect your ECM and will do so in most cases but sometimes the surge can be powerful enough to break your power train control module.

Top course of action when you encounter these problems is checking your fuse box. A diagram of the fuses is most often found on your Grand Caravan's manual and often times, on the cover of the fuse box itself.

Always remember that the engine computer uses software to function. So if you think your car is running rough it may need the software to loaded into it again. This is like restarting your computer at home when the software crashes. In most cases you can reset your ECU by removing it's fuse and then completely disconnect the battery. This will sometimes reset your computer and allow the car to function correctly again.
